Acknowledgement First of all I would like to thank the Almighty, who has always guided me to work on the right path of the life. This work would not have been possible without the encouragement and able guidance of my supervisor Dr. Seema Bawa and Ms. Shalini Batra. I thank my supervisors for their time, patience, discussions and valuable comments. Their enthusiasm and optimism made this experience both rewarding and enjoyable. Science & Engineering Department, a nice person, an excellent teacher and a well – credited researcher, who always encouraged me to keep going with work and always advised me with his invaluable suggestions. I will be failing in my duty if I don't express my gratitude to 'Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee', Director of the University, for making provisions of infrastructure such as library facilities, computer labs equipped with net facilities, immensely useful for the learners to equip themselves with the latest in the field. I am also thankful to the entire faculty and staff members of Computer Science and Engineering Department for their direct-indirect help, cooperation, love and affection, which made my stay at Thapar University memorable. Last but not least, I would like to thank my family whom I dearly miss and without whose blessings none of this would have been possible. To my parents, I own thanks for their wonderful love and encouragement. I would also like to thank my brother, since he insisted that I should do so. I would also like to thank my close friends for their constant support. iii ABSTRACT The World Wide Web is now widely used as a universal medium for information exchange but the application of WWW is limited due to information heterogeneity and non semantic nature of HTML. The vision of semantic web provides many new technologies to overcome the limitation of WWW. In advent of the Semantic Web and recent standardization efforts, Ontology has quickly become a popular and core semantic technology. Ontology is seen as a solution provider to knowledge based systems. It facilitates tasks such as knowledge sharing, reuse and intelligent processing by computer agents. A key problem addressed by Ontology is the semantic interoperability problem. Interoperability in general is a common problem in different domain applications and semantic interoperability is the hardest and an ongoing research problem. It is required for systems to exchange knowledge and having the meaning of the knowledge accurately and automatically interpreted …

MAMA: A Novel Approach to Ontology Mapping

Ontology is a key factor for enabling interoperability across heterogeneous systems, services and users. One of the most challenging tasks in its use is ontology construction. However, experts usually represent the same knowledge domain by the use of different ontologies that can differ in structure, concepts, relations and attributes. Therefore, ontology could lose its main feature: allowing t...

An Approach to Ontology Mapping Negotiation

Ontology mapping negotiation aims to achieve consensus among real-world entities about the process of transforming information between different models (ontologies). This paper describes a novel approach for ontology mapping negotiation, in which agents representing the real-world entities are able to achieve consensus among agents, about the mapping rules defined between two different ontologi...

A configurable translation-based cross-lingual ontology mapping system to adjust mapping outcomes

Ontologies are widely considered as the building blocks of the semantic web, and with them, comes the data interoperability issue. As ontologies are not necessarily always labelled in the same natural language, one way to achieve semantic interoperability is by means of cross-lingual ontology mapping. Translation techniques are often used as an intermediate step to translate the conceptual labe...

Reverse Leibniz, and then Bend It Like Beckham: Temporal Ontology Mapping as Problem-Solving Method

I discuss and construct ontology mappings between different ontologies of time. I show how you can use them as a new method to solve significant dynamics problems, by exploiting the properties of the ontology mapping. A unique feature of a nonlinear ontology mapping I propose is that it can rigorously treat infinitesimals as strictly finite computational quantities. The approach also suggests s...

Ontology Mapping with domain specific agents in the AQUA Question Answering System

This paper describes a domain specific multi-agent ontologymapping solution in the AQUA query answering system. In order to incorporate uncertainty inherent to the mapping process, the system uses the DempsterShafer model for dealing with incomplete and uncertain information produced during the mapping. A novel approach is presented how specialized agents with partial local knowledge of the par...

An Executive Approach Based On the Production of Fuzzy Ontology Using the Semantic Web Rule Language Method (SWRL)

Today, the need to deal with ambiguous information in semantic web languages is increasing. Ontology is an important part of the W3C standards for the semantic web, used to define a conceptual standard vocabulary for the exchange of data between systems, the provision of reusable databases, and the facilitation of collaboration across multiple systems. However, classical ontology is not enough ...
